Have you ever wondered how you type something on phone screen? You may say it is the simplest question ever asked to someone and probably you'll answer in this manner- we type by our fingers. Yes , we do type by our fingers;but how? What is the science behind it?What is the connection between our fingers and phone screen?Well, let's start today's discussion!
A few months back, I was trying to make a stylus for digital drawing(A stylus is a writing utensil or a small tool which is used to draw, or make a selection by tapping on touchscreen devices). I researched about this tool and discovered something very interesting. While I was making this , apparently a question came to my mind thatis how do fingers work on the screen? What is the role of our brain in this process and why we cannot draw on the surface of a screen-touched phone using just a piece of plastic?
We'll discuss this topic by questioning some points. Here we go!!
How Does The Brain Send Signals To The Body?
The Brain is the central organ of our nervous system. It contains approximately 14-16 billion neurons. Each neuron is connected by Synapses to several thousands other neurons. These neurons communicate with one another by means of axons which carry trains of chemical and electrical signals called action potentials to different parts of the body targeting a specific recipient cells.
How does thought originate? According to me, thoughts originate from nowhere or maybe from everywhere! we don't have a accurate answer for this question right now! When a thought pops into our head, an electrical signal passes back and forth between the various neurons responsible for that particular thought. Then it sends signal to target body parts or to the cells.
How Signals Are Transferred From Fingers To Phone?
As previously discussed, when a thought of typing a message arises in our head, then the brain sends chemical and electrical signals to our hands with the help of neurons. Now you have to transfer this signal through your finger to the screen as an input. Our body stores electric charge. This static electric charge is transferred through your finger and also through your mobile, basically sensitive to that electric charge , then you can operate it to draw or write.
Why Can't You Write Using A Piece Of Plastic?
The basic reason is that plastic cannot conduct electricity.
Want To Make A Stylus By Yourself?
If you're planning to make a digital art during this lockdown session and you cannot go outside to buy one due to COVID-19 pandemic. Don't worry!! You can make it by yourself at home by following the steps-
1. Take a ball pen and remove its refill(we don't need that)
2. Second step is to take an electrical wire, which has copper wires inside.
3.Make a small cut with the help of a scissor. But make sure while you're making this cut,you don't cut through the copper wire.
4.Remove its plastic cover and pull out one of the copper strands.Take that strand and fold both ends in order to put the folded ends into the both opened sides of the pen.
5.Now lock the end parts of the pen.
6.Take a small piece of cotton.Dip your finger in water and wet the cotton a little bit(we're using water because it's a good conductor of electricity)
7. And finally Your DIY Stylus is ready to use. Make sure that you're constantly touching the copper wire while using the stylus. Otherwise your stylus won't work properly.
